The ELC’s Literacy Buddy Program is a heartwarming initiative where volunteers help nurture a love for reading in young children across Sarasota County. With over 300 dedicated volunteers, this program pairs individuals with preschool children to exchange drawings, letters, and new books throughout the school year.
The goal is simple: build home libraries for children who have little to no access to books, fostering early literacy skills and a strong start to kindergarten.
How It Works:
As a Literacy Buddy, you’ll send three new books to your assigned child during the school year. Many volunteers choose the convenient option of shopping online and having books shipped directly to the preschool. This flexible program welcomes individuals, retirees, corporate teams, student groups, and seasonal residents spanning from Sarasota to San Diego.
Why Join?
- Support Early Literacy: Help children develop essential reading skills and build a foundation for lifelong learning.
- Make a Difference: Many of the children served come from low-income or foster care backgrounds, where access to books is scarce.
- Easy Participation: All exchanges are done through mail, making it easy to participate from anywhere.
